1851,
CHINA. 1,000 Cash Pattern, ND (1851).

KM-Pn60; cf.Hartill-22.767. Boo-Yuwan (Peking) Board of Public Works. Cast brass. VERY RARE. A pattern or "mother coin" for creating the molds for 1,000 Cash pieces. Compared with the normal cast issues, this piece is easily recognized as being of superior quality and manufacture. The coin is slightly thicker, the rims are nicely squared, and the edge is smooth. Additionally, the devices making up the inscriptions on either side are in considerably higher relief than the normal issues. The fields around them show evidence of being smoothed after initial casting to make for a better image transfer when creating the molds. Instead of the normal central square hole, there is a small circular hole through a slightly raised square. This was probably used in the production process to attach the planchet to a spindle or lathe for smoothing the edge. Nice partial old toning, with hardly any sign of wear or use. An interesting and RARE item which is seldom seen or offered for sale.
