1 Dollar    (Vendue pour $3300.0)

1854-D NGC graded Unc Details. Improperly Cleaned. Prooflike with some light hairlines. Well struck with gold toning. Only 2,935 pieces struck. The low mintage makes this Dahlonega, Georgia date famous. This beautiful rarity sums up nicely the experience of the gold consignment of which it is a part. The coin exhibits toned satin luster on a well presented and attractive planchet with only a trace of cleaning signs in the fields and on the topmost areas of Liberty's hair. It is the kind of coin that collectors expect to find in the grade: sharply impressed, rims free of injury, and good-looks. Elusive as a date, elusive in no uncertain terms. Even more is this true in high grades. We return to the strike. The strike is crisp in so many areas it is virtually impossible to find any weakness (whereas the strike is so-so in most other survivors). Some lack of detail may be noted at the lower rim denticles on the reverse below the ribbon bow, and that is just about the only point of reference where bold detail isn't found! When describing the reverse, we see the usual light raised die lines around the mintmark and in areas nearby (a result of die finishing at the mint). Some bidders might edge away from bidding when presented with an 1854-D gold dollar that has been "improperly cleaned." However, as we've already stated, the cleaning is light and scarcely affects the delicate surfaces. After all, this is one of the rarest D-mint dates in the series struck at all the historic Dahlonega branch mint whose production spanned the years 1838-1861. Only the P-mint of 1854 is at all common (PCGS # 7526) . Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500. The Frank McCarthy Collection. Categories: $1 Gold
