1918-S. NGC graded MS-66. Nice even toning on this sparkling Gem Indian Head five-cent piece. Locating a 1918-S in Gem MS66 condition will test the mettle of any collector since the issue is rare in its own right and one that is seldom offered in Gem Mint State. The elusive nature of the '18-S in MS65 and above is largely due to poor strike quality. In fact, the S-mint coins are the worst made of the three 1918-dated deliveries in the Buffalo Nickel series. That said, we are delighted to say that both sides are overall sharp in definition with conspicuous bold detail over the central high points. The bison's head and tail show crisp definition. Light nickel-gray color commands respect since it is free of the to drift toward spotting and other problems found on many other examples. There are really no noticeable post-production marks or distractions, either. We cannot overemphasize the magnitude of this original-looking Gem for Buffalo Nickel Registry Set contender. Pop 1; 1 finer in 66 Star. Estimated Value $16,000 - 17,000. Previous in Heritage's 4/2011 sale where it realized $29,900. Categories: Buffalo Nickels
