Ante una reacción pública más negativa, los centavos Coronet fueron rediseñados en 1835 por el nuevo grabador jefe Christian Gobrecht. Este último cambio importante en la moneda actualizó el anverso dándole a Liberty una apariencia más delgada y juvenil. Los ajustes menores continuaron hasta 1843, y el diseño de 1843 prevaleció hasta el final de la acuñación en 1857. Unos 11 años después de que se suspendiera el centavo grande, un empleado de la Casa de la Moneda acuñó varios centavos grandes con fecha de 1868, casi con certeza para venderlos como rarezas instantáneas a los numismáticos. Se sabe que sobreviven menos de una docena de estas emisiones no oficiales, acuñadas tanto en bronce como en cobre-níquel.
