1840 N-12 R1 Small Date MS60. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with lustrous lighter reddish steel toning faded down from mint color in protected areas of the reverse. There is a small chip out of the planchet on the rim just left of the date, as struck, and a tiny reddish brown stain at the top of the second A in AMERICA. MDS, die state b. The dies have been freshly lapped removing all traces of the lump under the 1 and the reverse die lines at NITE and ER (Newcomb's #13). A rather large but shallow low spot shows in the field between stars 11 & 12 and the main curl (caused by debris on the die). Tied for CC#4. DWH #2011. Estimated Value $400-UP.
